MEBENDAZOLE

Mebendazole, a benzimidazole carbomate derivative, occurs as a
white to slightly yellow powder; m.p. 288-289; practically insoluble inwater,
alcohol, chloroform, ether and dilute mineral acids; freely soluble in formic
acid.
Uses:
It
is an anthelmintic with activity against most nematode and some cestode. It is
poorly absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract and is used principally to
treat infections due to roundworms threadworms, hookworms and whipworm. During
treatment with mebendazole, migration of worms with expulsion through the mouth
and nose occurred in some patients. It is also used in the treatment of
capilliariasis .
Side
effect
Side effects have generally been restricted to gastro-intestinal
disturbances such as transient abdominal pain and diarrhoea
