Meprobamate is a white, odourless crystalline powder, m.p.
104-106°, with characteristic bitter taste.
It is slightly soluble in water and
ether; soluble in alcohol (1 in 7) and acetone; stored in airtight containers.
The substance is stable in dilute acid and alkali and is not broken down by
gastric or intestinal juices. It belongs to the carbamate group of
anxiolytics.
Uses : Meprobamate is used in the treatment of anxiety and
tension; sometimes as a muscle relaxant in the management of muscle spasm.

Side Effect
Drowsiness is the most frequent side-effect of meprobamate in
addition to nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, paraesthesia, weakness, headache,
dizziness, ataxia and disturbances of Vision.
