Mepyramine is a substituted 2-aminopyridine which is
prepared by heating pyridine in a suitable solvent with sodamide. The
nucleophilic amino group enters at the position adjacent to the nitrogen atom.
Mepyramine is an oily liquid, b.p.2019. It is used as maleate
salt.
Mepyramine maleate (Brand Names: Dorantamin; Enrumay Histan;
Histatex; Histosol; Paraminyl maleate; Stamine), m.p. 100-101°, is a white or
creamy-white, crystalline, odourles powder.
It is soluble in water, alcohol and
chloroform; slightly soluble in ether. A 2% solution in water has a pH of 4.9
to 5.2 It is stored in airtight containers and protected from light.
Uses:
Mepyramine is an
antihistamic agent used in the treatment of allergic conditions. It is employed
locally for insect bites and stings and for allergic and pruritic skin
conditions.
