Metformin hydrochloride, m.p. 218-220°, (Brand Names: Diabefagos,
Glucophage, Haurymellin; Meguan; Metiguanide)
It is a white, odourless,
hygroscopic, crystalline powder; soluble in water and alcohol; practically
insoluble in chloroform and ether; stored in airtight containers.
Uses: Metformin is used in non-insulin dependent dia-betes mellitus
when diet control fails. It has been reported to increase blood-lipid concentrations.
Side Effect
Metformin causes gastro-intestinal adverse effects with anorexia,
nausea, and vomiting. Lactic acidosis has occurred but to a lesser extent than
phenformin.
