METHARBITAL




Brand Name : Gemonil.




Metharbital, m.p. 155°, is a white crystalline powder with a faint aromatic odour. It is soluble in water, alcohol and ether. A saturated solution in water has a pH of about 6. It is stored in airtight containers.




Metharbitone is an antiepileptic agent with general properties similar to those of phenobarbitone. 



It is demethylated in the liver to barbitone. The usual initial dose is 100 mg one to three times daily.


The anticonvulsant activity of the barbiturates is not related to the sedation action. The three anticonvulsant barbiturates show a high degree of effectiveness in grand mal only and not useful in petit mal and psychomotor epilepsy.

HOMATROPINE

HOMATROPINE Brand Names : Mandelyltropeine, Tropine mandelate. Homatropine is a synthetic alkaloid which is a lower homologue of atropine. It is prepared by the interaction of tropine and mandelic acid. Homatropine, m.p. 99-100°, occurs as colourless, odourless crystals or a white crystalline powder. It is hygroscopic, but only slightly soluble in water; soluble in alcohol, benzene, chloroform, ether, acetone and dilute acids. The hydrobromide or hydrochloride is obained readily from the free base by neutralizing with hydrobromic or hydrochkoric acid. The hydrobromide occurs as colourless, odourless crystals or a white crystalline powder. It is soluble in water and alcohol; slightly soluble in chloroform; very slightly soluble in ether; stored in airtight containers and protected from light.
