METHYLDOPA
Methyldopa is a colourless or a white to
yellowish - white, odourless, fine powder which may contain friable lumps; m.p.
- 300 (decomp).
It is slightly soluble in water and alcohol; practically
insoluble in chloroform and ether; dissolves in dilute mineral acids.
It is
kept in well-closed containers and protected from light.
Methyldopate Hydrochloride (Brand Names : Aldomet Ester
Hydrochloride) is a zwitter ion and is not soluble enough for parenteral use.
It is soluble in water to the extent of 10-300 mg/ ml at pH 2-7. It may be
stabilized with sodium bisulphite or disodium EDTA.
It is a white, odourless,
crystalline powder which is slightly soluble in chloroform; practically
insoluble in ether.
Uses : Methyldopa and its derivatives are antihypertensive .
Side Effect
The common side effects include depression, psychic effects,
nightmares, nausea, dryness of the mouth, headache, dizziness, oedema and
disorders of sexual function.
