Methylthiouracil is a homologue of thiouracil synthesized by
condensing thiourea with sodium derivative of ethyl acetoacetate:
Methylthiouracil, m.p. 326-3319 (decomp), is a white odourless
crystalline powder which is soluble in boiling water; sparingly soluble in
alcohol, chloroform and ether; freely soluble in ammonium hydroxide and in
solutions of alkali hydroxides.
A saturated aqueous solution is neutral or
slightly acidic to litmus. It is protected from light and stored is well-closed
containers.
Uses : Methylthiouracilis an antithyroid agent which has been used
in the treatment of hyperthyroidism.
Side Effect
The common side effects include nausea, vomiting, gastric distress, headache and skin rashes.
