METHYPRYLONE

METHYPRYLONE

Brand Names : Noctan; Dimerin; Noludar.

Methyprylone is a derivative of 2, 4-piperdinedione which is synthesized by condensing methyl formate with diethyl- acetoacetic ester by means of sodium in toluene.

An aqueous solution of the product is then heated with ammonium chloride to form the corresponding amino derivative. This is dissolved in ethanol and heated with 50 per cent KOH solution at 50° to condense carboxyl group with the amino group.

The potassium derivative upon acidification yields a tetrahydropyridine which combines with formaldehyde in the presence of sodium sulphite to give 5-hydroxymethyl derivative, which upon catalytic reduction gives methyprylone

Methyprylone is a white crystalline powder with a slight characteristic odour, and bitter taste, m.p. 74-77. It is soluble in water, alcohol, benzene and chloroform; stored in airtight containers.

Uses : Methyprylone, a piperidinedione derivative, is administered as a sedative and hypnotic in the form of tablets.

Side Effect

In therapeutic doses side effects include nausea, headache, excitement, hang-over, blurred vision and sometimes skin rashes. Abuse may lead to habituation or addiction.
