NEOMYCIN SULPHATE
Brand Names : Fradiomycin
sulphate; Neomycini sulfas; Mycifradin; Neobiotic.
Neomycin sulphate is a mixture of the
sulphates of the antimicrobial substances produced by the growth of certain
selected strains of Streptomyces fradiae.
It occurs as a white or
yellowish-white, odourless, hygroscopic, photosensitive, and crystalline
powder. It is very soluble in water; slightly soluble in alcohol and insoluble
in acetone, chloroform, and ether) It is stored at a temperature not exceeding
30° in airtight containers and protected from light.
Uses
Neomycin sulphate is used to treat
infections of the skin and eye due to susceptible staphylococci and other
organisms, as well as in ear-drops. A cream containing neomycin sulphate and
chlorhexidine hydrochloride has been used for application to the nostrils in
the treatment of staphylococcal nasal carriers. It is most useful antibiotic in
the treatment of gastrointestinal infections dermatologic infections and acute
bacterial peritonitis. It is also employed in abdominal surgery to reduce
complication due to infections from bacterial flora of the bowel. It is very
slightly absorbed from the digestive tract, so its oral use does not produce
any systemic effect.
Adverse Effect
Adverse effects of neonsiycin are the
same as in case of gentamicin sulphate. It may cause irreversible deafness when
given by injection or by mouth. In large doses it may cause nausea, vomiting,
and diarrhoea. Prolonged oral therapy may cause a malabsorption syndrome with steatorrhoea
and diarrhoea Neomycin has a neuromuscular blocking action.
