NITROFURANTOIN

It occurs as yellow odourless or almost odourless crystals or fine
powder with a bitter after taste, m.p. 270-272°(dec).
It is discoloured by
alkalis and by exposure to light. It is very slightly soluble in water and
alcohol; soluble 1 in 16 of dimethylformide.
It is stored at a temperature not
exceeding 25 in airtight containers and avoid contact with metal other than
stainless steel or aluminium; protected from light.
Uses
1.
Nitrofurantoin is used in the treatment of
uncomplicated lower urinary tract infection and for long-term suppressive
therapy.
2.
It has
been effective for infections that were resistant to antibiotics. Few
side-effects, such as diarrhoea, pruritus or crystalluria, have been observed.
Side effect
The most common side effect of nitrofurantoin is with
gastro-intestinal tract causing nausea, vomiting, anorexia, and abdominal pain
