NONSTEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY AGENTS
The drugs used to reduce inflammation
and the pain arising from it are termed as anti-inflammatory agents.
Glucocorticoids, e.g. hydrocortisone and cortisone, are generally used as
antiinflammatory states. but they have many undesirable adverse effects.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents do not show undesirable effects of
steroid therapy. These drugs give symptomatic relief from the pain and
inflammation and have analgesic and antipyretic properties. These drugs are
used in inflammatory conditions in arthritis, rheumatism, lupus erythematosus
and ankylosing spondylitis. They possess lower maximal effects than opioid
analgesics. The useful nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are salicylic acid
derivatives (e.g. aspirin), N-arylanthranilic acids, indolyl or arylacetic acid
derivatives, and pyrazole derivatives.
