NORADRENALINE
NORADRENALINE.
Brand Nanes : Norepinephrine;
Levarterenol
Noradrenaline, the catecholannine, is also a product of the
adrenal medulla.It is liberated at sympathetic nerve endings when they are in
action.
It is the lower homologue of adrenaline and is a primary amine rather
than a secondary amine .
The i-form the demethylated precursor of epinephrine,
occurs in animals and man. A synthesis identical to that of adrenaline is used.
In an another preparative method protocatechuic aldehyde is the starting
material.
The racemic mixture can be resolved by formation of (+)- acid
tartrates. The dil-form, m.p. 191°, is sparingly soluble in water; very
slightly soluble in alcohol, readily soluble in dilute acids and alkalies.
L-From, also known as levarterenol, Adrenor and Levophed, occurs as
microcrystalline powder, m.p. 216-218°. l-Form hydrochloride (synonym,
Arterenol), m.p. 145147, is freely soluble in water. Solutions are slowly
oxidized under the influence of light and oxygen.
L-Form Bitartrate (Brand Names : Levarterenol bitartrate; Aktamin;
Binodrenal)
It is a white, crystalline powder, m.p. 1021049; when anhydrous, m.p.
158-159. It darkens on exposure to air and light. It is soluble in water (1 in
2.5), and alcohol (1 in 300); practically insoluble in chloroform and ether;
stored in airtight containers and protected from light.
Uses : Noradrenaline is a sympathoninetic agent used to maintain
blood pressure in acute hypotensive states resulting from trauma, central
vasomotor depression and haemorrhage.
