NORTRYPTYLINE



Brand Names : Desitriptilina; Desmethylamitriptyline; Avantyl: Aventyl: Allegron: Noritren: Ateben; Psychostyl; Sensaval.




This is a lower homologue of amitriptyline which is manufactured from the dibenzocycloheptenone by condensation with N-methyl-β-chloroallyl amine, followed by reduction and dehydration.

Nortriptyline hydrochloride (Brand Names : Acetexa, Altilev; Nortrilen; Norzepine; Pamelor: Sensival: Vividyl), m.p. 213-215°, 

It is a white powder, with a slight characteristcodour. It is soluble in alcohol, water and chloroform; practically insoluble in ether, acetone, benzene; stored in a well-closed container and protected from light.



Uses : Nortriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant used in the treatment of mental depression, and for nocturnal enuresis in children.



Side effect

It is less sedating than amitriptyline.

HOMATROPINE

HOMATROPINE Brand Names : Mandelyltropeine, Tropine mandelate. Homatropine is a synthetic alkaloid which is a lower homologue of atropine. It is prepared by the interaction of tropine and mandelic acid. Homatropine, m.p. 99-100°, occurs as colourless, odourless crystals or a white crystalline powder. It is hygroscopic, but only slightly soluble in water; soluble in alcohol, benzene, chloroform, ether, acetone and dilute acids. The hydrobromide or hydrochloride is obained readily from the free base by neutralizing with hydrobromic or hydrochkoric acid. The hydrobromide occurs as colourless, odourless crystals or a white crystalline powder. It is soluble in water and alcohol; slightly soluble in chloroform; very slightly soluble in ether; stored in airtight containers and protected from light.
