NYSTAIN
Brand Names: Fungicidin, Biofanal; Diastatin; Candex;
CandioHermal; Mycostatin; Moronal; Multilind; Nystan; Nystavescent; O-V Statin;
Nistatina; Nystatinum.
Nystatin is an antifungal substance produced by the growth of
certain strains of Streptomyces noursei. It contains mainly tetraenes, the
principal component being nystatin A.
It is a valuable substance used to treat
both internal and local infections of Candida albicans. The sugar moiety
attached to the aglycone is mycosamine, 3,6-dideoxy-3-amino-D-mannose.
Nystatin is a light yellow to light brown hygroscopic powder with
a characteristic cereal-like odour; gradually decomposes above 1609 without
melting by 250°.
It exhibits strong reducing properties. It is very soluble in
water; slightly soluble in methanol; insoluble in alcohol, chloroform, and
ether, freely soluble in dimethyl formamide.
It is unstable to moisture, heat,
light and air, and its solutions are inactivated rapidly by acids and bases.
Solutions and aqueous suspensions begin to lose activity soon II after
preparation. Aqueous suspensions are stable for 10 minutes on heating to 100°
at pH 7.0; also stable in modertely alkaline media. It is stored at a
temperature between 2 to 8° in airtight containers and protected from light.
Uses : Nystatin is used for the prophylaxis and treatment of a
candidiasis of the skin and mucous membranes, especially that e1 caused by
Candida albicans. It is also given as eye-drops or as a bladder wash .
Side Effect
Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea have occasionally been reported
after the oral administration of nystatin. Irritation may occur
rarely after the topical use of nystatin, and allergic contact dermititis has
been reported.
