The oxytetracycline antibiotic substance has been isolated from the elaboration
products of the actinomycete, Streptomyces rimosus, grown on a suitable
medium.
It occurs as a pale yellow or yellow or light brown, hygroscopic,
stable crystalline powder with a bitter taste. It is soluble in water (1 in 2),
alcohol (1 in 45); solubel , practically insoluble in chloroform and ethery
Concentrated Sta aqueous solutions at neutral pH hydrolyze of standing and for deposit
crystals of oxytetracycline and the solutions become by turbid. Oxytetracycline
hydrochloride is inactivated rapidly by deterioration in solutions having a pH
of less than 2 and is e rapidly destroyed by alkali hydroxide solutions.
.
The
amphoteric base and the hydrochloride are absorbed rapidly from the digestive
tract readily. Oxytetracycline is stored in airtight hv containers and
protected from light.
Uses:
Oxytetracycline has the same antimicrobial activity and uses as
tetracycline hydrochloride. It is usually used in tablets, the calcium salt in
aqueous oral suspensions, and the hydrochloride in capsules and
intravenous injections.
A synthetic derivative of oxytetracycline. Acts as a broad spectrum antibiotic and matrix metallo-proteinases (MMP) inhibitor. Useful in studies involving wound healing and tissue remodeling. Doxycycline Hyclate
