PAMAQUINE
Brand Names : Plasmochin; Aminoquin; Praequine; Beprochine;
Gamefar; Quipenyl;Plasmoquine.
It was the first successful 8-aminoquinoline derivative which was
introduced by Germans in 1826. It may be synthesized by condensing 6-methoxy-8-aminoquinoline
(I) with 1diethylamino-4-bromopentane (II).
Pamaquine occurs as dark yellow oil.
Pamaquine phosphate (Brand Names : Primachin phosphate; Primaquini
diphosphas; Primaquinium phosphate; SN-13, 272) is an orange-red, odourless, crystalline
powder. It is soluble in water (1 in 16); practically insoluble in chloroform
and ether. It is protected from light.
Uses : Primaquine is an antimalarial effective against
exoerythrocytic forms of the plasmodia parasite, and is a gametocyticide.
Primaquine is generally well tolerated at normal therapeutic doses.
Adverse Effect
Adverse effects include abdominal cramps, gastric distress. nausea
and vomiting, headache, visual disturbance, and pruritus.
