This is prepared by reduction of p-nitrophenol in glacial acetic
acid, acetylation of p-aminophenol with acetic anhydride or ketone, or from
p-hydroxyacetophenone hydrazone.
Paracetomol, m.p. 169-171°, is a white odourless crystalline
powder with a slightly bitter taste.
It is soluble in water (1:70: considerably
more soluble in hot water (1:20) and in alcohol (l: 10); very slightly soluble
in chloroform and ether; insoluble in petroleum ether, and benzene. It is kept
in airtight containers and protected from light.
Uses : Paracetamol has analgesic and antipyretic properties.
Side Effect
Side-effects of paracetamol therapy are haematological reactions
and skin rashes.
