Pargyline hydrochloride, m.p.
154-155°, is a white crystalline powder with a slight odour. Sublimation occurs
when kept at high temperatures.
It is readily solubleinwater; soluble in
alcohol and acetone; aqueous solutions are unstable. It is stored in airtight
containers.
Uses: Pargyline hydrochloride is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor
which is used to treat hypertension.
Side effect
The main side-effects are orthostatic hypotension and attacks of
dizziness; others are drowsiness, headache, weakness, fatigue, dryness of
mouth, constipation, oedema and gastrointestinal disturbances.
