Pentazocine, m.p. 145 *-148*, is a white or creamy white
odourless powder. It is practically insoluble in water:soluble
in alcohol (l in15).chloroform (1 in 2) and ether (1 in 3). It is kept in
airtight containers and protected from light.
Pentazocine is used as its hydrochloride salt which is a white or
pale cream, odourless, crystalline powder. It is soluble in water, alcohol and
chloroform; practically insoluble in ether. It is kept in airtight containers
and protected from light.
Uses: Pentazocine is an opioid analgesic with actions and uses
similar to those of morphine. It is used for the relief of moderate to severe
pain. Its analgesic effect declines more rapidly than that of morphine.
Side Effect
The most frequent side-effects of pentazocine are headache,
dizziness, nausea and vomiting, sedation, and sweating.
