PETHIDINE AND ANALOGUES
Brand Names : Isonipecaine; Meperidine.
Pethidne Fentanyi Pethidine is a derivative of piperidine and is
synthesized by treating benzyl cyanide with di-(2-chloroethyl) methylamine
followed by hydrolysis and esterification of the resultant product.
Pethidine is a strong tertiary base and an ester. It is used as a
hydrochloride salt which is an analgesic with a morphinelike action.
Pethidine Hydrochloride (Brand Names: Algil; Alodan; Dolantin:
Dolestine; Dolenal; Demerol hydrochloride; Dolosal; Endolat: Dispadol;
Dolvanol; Dolicontral; Dolomeurin (e); Centralgin; Dolopethin; Mefedina;
Pantalgine; Sauteralgyll; Spasmedal; Spasmodolin; Mephedine; Lydol; Lidol;
Synlaudine). m.p. 1861899. It is a fine white odourless crystalline powder
which is very soluble in water; freely soluble in alcohol, acetone, ethyl
acetate and chloroform; practically insoluble in ether and benzene. It is kept
in airtight containers and protected from light.
Uses:
It is a narcotic analgesic agent used for the symptomatic relief of
pain, to alleviate the anxiety associated with pain; as general anaesthetic in
high doses.
It is also used as pre-operative medication and as an adjunct to
anaesthesia. It has little effect on cough and diarrhoea.
Side Effect.
The common side effects of morphine are nausea, vomiting
constipation, drowsiness, and confusion. Dry mouth, sweating. facial flushing,
vertigo, bradycardia, palpitation, orthostatic hypotension, hypothermia,
restlessness, changes in mood and miosis also occur. Abuse leads to habituation
or addiction.
