PHALYSULFATHAZOLE
PHALYSULFATHAZOLE
Brand Names : Entexidin; Entexidina; AFI-Ftalyl; Enteramida; '
Entero-Sulfina; Ftalazol; Intestiazol; Sulfacetil; Sulftalyl; Taleudron;
Talidine; Thalistatyl; Ultratiazol; Thalazole.
It is prepared by condensing sulfathiazole with phthalic anhydride
The compound is an odourless, white, crystalline powder with
slightly bitter taste. It slowly darkens on exposure to light; efferverces at
244-250 and then melts at 272°-277 (dec).
It is insoluble inwater and
chloroformandslightly soluble in alcohol and ether; readily soluble in strong
acids and alkalies and ammonia water and liberates carbon dioxide from a
solution of sodium bicarbonate
Uses
Phthalylsulfathiazole is an intestinal
antibacterial agent and is used in the treatment of bacillary dysentery and to
reduce the bacterial count in the large bowel in patients undergoing surgery.
Like succinylsulfathiazole, this compound is poorly absorbed from the
intestinal tract. Because of its low absorption and low toxicity, compared with
sulfaguanidine, it is useful in intestinal infections
