PHENACEMIDE
Brand Names : Phenylacetylurea;
Epiclase; Pharcetur; Phenurone; Phetyl ureum.
Phenacemide is prepared by the action of aqueous ammonia on
phenacetylurethan or by the action of phenacetylchloride on urea.
It occurs as
an odourless, white, fine crystalline powder, m.p. 212-216°. It is very
slightly soluble in water, alcohol, chloroform and ether; slightly soluble in
acetone and methyl alcohol. It is stored in airtight containers.
Uses: Phenacemide is an
acetylurea antiepileptic agent used in the treatment of epilepsy, especially in
the psychomotor type of seizure. Due to its potential toxicity it should be
employed only in patients whose seizures are impossible to control with other
recognized anti-epileptics.
Adverse Effect
Severe adverse effects reported with phenacemide include
personality changes, blood disorders including aplastic anaemia, and liver and
kidney damage.
