PHENELZINE
PHENELZINE
Phenelzine is an aralkyl
derivative of the inorganic base, hydrazine, NH, -NH. It is synthesized from
2-phenylethanol, which on treatment with phosphorus pentachloride yields
phenethyl chloride which on condensation with hydrazine produces phenethylhydrazine.
Phenelzine sulphate (Brand Names: W-1544a; Nardil; Estinerval;
Kalgan; Nardelzine; Phenodyn; Stinerval)
It is a white or yellowish white powder
with a peculiar odour; soluble in water (l in 7); practically insoluble in
alcohol, chloroform, and ether; stored in a cool place in airtight containers
and protected from light.
Uses: Phenelzine is used in the treatment ofneurotic ora typical
depression.
Adverse Effect
Adverse effects of phenelzine include orthostatic hypotension,
dizziness, drowsiness, headache, weakness and fatigue, dryness of mouth,
constipation, nausea and vomiting.
