Phenformin hydrochloride
(Synonyms. DBI-TD, Dipar, Meltrol), a biguanide hypoglycaemic agent, m.p.
175-178°, is soluble in water. It functions extrahepatically and acts as an
insulin-supporting or reinforcing agent.
Uses: Phenformin is used on maturity-onset diabetes mellitus.
especially in patients who have no other complications and the disease cannot
be controlled by diet alone.
Side Effect
Phenformin causes lactic acidosis. FDA has declared this substance
an imminent hazard to public health.
