Phenol occurs as colourless or fainty pink crystalline mass , becoming pink on keeping . It has characteristic phenolic odour .



It is soluble 1:15 in water . very soluble in alcohol , choloroform , ether , glycerin . fixed and volatile oils and is sparingly soluble in petroleum ether .

Uses




1.       Phenol is a general disinfectant for toilets , stables , cesspools , floors and drains .
2.       Phenol is used in 0.1 – 1% concentration as an antipuritic in phenolated calamine lotion or as an ointment or aqueous solution .
3.       Pure phenol may be used to cauterize small wounds
4.       It is used for the manufacturing of artificial resins , medical and industrial organic compounds and dyes and as a reagent in chemical analysis .
