PHENOXYMETHYLPENICILLIN
PHENOXYMETHYLPENICILLIN
Brand Names : Penicillin V:
Penicillin phenoxymethyl; Phenoxymethylpenicillin: Phenoxymethylpenicillinic
acid: AcipenV; Apopen; Distaquaine V; Eskacillin V; Fenacilin; Fenospen;
Meropenin; Oracillin; Oratren; Oracillin; Ospen; Pen-Oral; PenVee;
Penopenicillin: P-MegaTablinen, Stabicillin: V-Cil:V-Cillin: Vebecillin;
Phenomycilline
It is obtained by adding 2- CH3 phenoxyethanol to the Penicillium-N
notatum on culture medium using yeast autolyzate as a source of nitrogen. It was
reported by Behrens and Coworkers in l948 as a biosynthetic product .
It is a
white crystalline powder; m.p. 120-128° (dec), odourles with a slight peculiar
odour. It is stable in air up to 37; relatively stable to pH 1.8; very soluble
in water, soluble in polar organic solvents, practically insoluble in vegetable
oils and in liquid paraffin. Its activity is 1696 units mg.
The biologically
active form is the dextrorotatory D-form; the DL-form is half active.
LPenicillin V has little antibiotic activity. The drug is stored in airtight
containers.
It is widely
used because of its resistance to hydrolysis by ga ic juice and its ability to
produce uniform concentrations in blood. The free acid requires about 1,200 ml
of water to dissolve 1 g. The salt of phenoxymethylpenicillin with N,N'-
bis(dehydroabietyl)ethylenediamine (compocillin-V) provides a very long-acting
form of this compound. For parenteral solutions, the potassium salt of
phenoxymethylpenicillin is usually employed.
