Phenylbutazone is synthesized by condensing n-butyl substituted malonic ester with hydrazobenzene (1,2-diphenylhy- drazine) in the presence of sodium ethoxide.




Phenylbutazone, m.p. 105°, is a white or off white, odourless, crystalline powder. It is practically insoluble in water; sparingly soluble in alcohol; soluble in chloroform; ether and aqueous solutions of alkali hydroxides. It is kept in airtight containers and protected from light.




Uses : Phenylbutazone has analgesic, antipyretic and antiinflammatory properties. It is used in rheumatic disorders, arthritis and Reiter's disease (a condition characterized by arthritis, urethritis and conjunctivitis


Side Effect
Nausea. vomiting, epigastric distress. diarrhoea. oedema. skin rashes, vertigo, headache and blurred vision may occur. More serious reactions include gastric irritation. ulceration, hepatitis. jaundice, nephritis. renal failure and goitre.

HOMATROPINE

HOMATROPINE Brand Names : Mandelyltropeine, Tropine mandelate. Homatropine is a synthetic alkaloid which is a lower homologue of atropine. It is prepared by the interaction of tropine and mandelic acid. Homatropine, m.p. 99-100°, occurs as colourless, odourless crystals or a white crystalline powder. It is hygroscopic, but only slightly soluble in water; soluble in alcohol, benzene, chloroform, ether, acetone and dilute acids. The hydrobromide or hydrochloride is obained readily from the free base by neutralizing with hydrobromic or hydrochkoric acid. The hydrobromide occurs as colourless, odourless crystals or a white crystalline powder. It is soluble in water and alcohol; slightly soluble in chloroform; very slightly soluble in ether; stored in airtight containers and protected from light.
