PILOCARPINE

Names : Chibro pilocarpine; Ocusert Pilo.
Pilocarpine, m.p. 34°, is an alkaloid obtained from the dried
leaflets of Pilocarpus jaborandi , or Pilocarpus microphyllus (Family
Rut-aceae). It occurs as colourless, translucent, odourless, faintly bitter
crystals or as a viscous, hygroscopic, oily liquid. It is soluble in water,
alcohol and chloroform; sparingly soluble in ether; stored at a temperature not
exceeding 8° in airtight containers; protected from light.
Pilocarpine hydrochloride, m.p. 204-205, (Brand Names: Almocarpin,
Pilomiotin; Isopto carpine; Pilovisc)isanodourless, hygroscopic, colourless
crystalline powder; soluble in water, alcohol and chloroform; practically
insoluble in ether; stored in airtight containers and protected from light.
Uses : Pilocarpine is a parasympathomimetic
agent with primarily the muscarinic effects of acetylcholine. It is most
commonly used to reduce intraocular pressure in the treatment of openangle
glaucoma. It is antiglaucoma and cholinergic agent.
Side Effect
Adverse effects of pilocarpine are the same as for neostigmine. It
may produce ciliary spasm, ocular pain and irritation, blurred vision, and
headache.
