Prednisolone, m.p. 240-241 (decomp), is
an odourless, white, crystalline, hygroscopic powder which is very slightly
soluble in water; soluble in alcohol, acetone, chloroform, dioxane and methyl
alcohol. It is kept in well-closed containers and protected from light.
Prednisolone acetate, m.p. 237-239
(decomp), is an odourless, white, crystalline powder which is practically
insoluble in water; soluble in alcohol; slightly soluble in acetone and
chloroform.
Other salts or derivatives of prednisolone
are prednisolone butyl acetate, prednisolone sodium phosphate, prednisolone
succinate, prednisolone hexanoate; prednisolone pivalate; prednisolone sodium
metasulphobenzoate, prednisolone steaglate, prednisolone tebutate, methyl
prednisolone N.F. and methylprednisolone sodium succinate.
Uses: Prednisolone is a glucocorticoid used as
anti-inflammatory agent. The side-effects of prednisolone are similar to those
of betamethazone.
