Procainamide hydrochloride m. p.
165-169°, is a white to tan coloured, odourless, hygroscopic, crystalline
powder. It is freely soluble in water; soluble in alcohol; slightly soluble in
chloroform; very sparingly soluble in benzene and ether. The pH of a 10
percent solution is 5.5. Commercially available aqueous solutions are preserved
with 0.9 per cent benzyl alcohol and 0.09 per cent of sodium bisulfite. The
drug is stored in airtight containers.
Uses : Procainamide is cardiac depressant used for the acute
control of arrhythmias to maintain sinus rhythm after cardioversion of atrial
fibrillation, to treat arrhythmias and extrasystoles and correct cardiac
arrhythmias during anaesthesia.
Side effect
Cardiac effects, hypersensitivity, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, bitter
taste, and diarrhoea are the common side effects of procainamide therapy.
