Proguanil hydrochloride is a white, odourless, bitter, crystalline
powder that is slightly soluble in water, more soluble in hot water, soluble in
alcohol (1 in 40); practically insoluble in chloroform and ether. It is stable
in air but slowly darkens on exposure to light. Therefore, it is protected from
light.
Uses: Proguanil is used as an antimalarial drug and to reduce
transmission of infection. It is active against pre-erythrocytic forms and is a
slow blood schizontocide.
Side Effect
Proguanil hydrochloride is well tolerated after usualdoses; after
large doses vomiting, epigastric discomfort, haematuria, and renal irritation
may occur.
