PROPANTHELINE BROMIDE

Propantheline bromide, m.p. 159-161°, is a white or
yellowish-white odourless, hygroscopic powder. it is very soluble in water,
alcohol and chloroform; practically insoluble in ether and benzene; stored in
well-closed containers.
Uses: Propantheline bromide is an antimuscarinic agent with
peripheral effects similar to those of atropine. It is used in the treatment of
peptic ulcer, gastritis, acute pancreatitis, enuresis. hyperhidrosis and spasm
of the gastro-intestinal, biliary and urinary tracts.
Side Effect
Side effects of propanthelene bromide and other antimuscarinic
agents include dryness of mouth, thirst, dilation of the pupils, flushing and
dryness of the skin, bradycardia, reduction of tone, constipation, etc.
Sometimes vomiting, giddiness and staggering may occur. Toxic doses cause
tachycardia, rapid respiration, hyperpyrexia and CNS stimulation.
