Propanolol is an ether of 1-naphthol . Its hydrochloride occurs as
a white or creamy-white, odourless, crystalline powder; soluble in water (1 in
20) and alcohol; slightly soluble in chloroform; practically insoluble in
ether, benzene and ethyl acetate. In aqueous solutions propranolol decomposes
with oxidation of the isopropylamine side-chain, accompanied by a reduction in
pH and discolouration of the solution. Solutions are most stable at pH 3 and
decompose rapidly when alkaline. The compound is stored in well-closed
containers and protected from light.
Uses:
Propranololis a cardiac depressant (anti-arrhythmic) and adrenergic blocker. It
reduces the rates and f of the heart and decreases the rate of conduction of
impulses. It is us the treatment of hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, to
improve the tolerance to exercise in patients with angina pectoris, bronchial
asthma, allergic rhinitis during pollen season, etc.
Side Effect
The most common side effects of propranolol are nausea, vomiting
and other gastro-intestinal disturbances, fatigue and dizziness.
