PROPYLIODONE
PROPYLIODONE
Propyliodone, m.p. 186-187°. is the propyl ester of
3,5-di-iodo-4-pyridone-N-acetic acid. It occurs as a white; almost odourless, crystalline
powder which is practically insoluble in water; slightly soluble in alcohol and
in chloroform, very slightly soluble in ether. It is kept in airtight
containers and protected from light.
Hydrolysis by means of boiling sodium hydroxide solution and
subsequent acidification yields the butyric acid. It is used as a sterile
aqueous or oil suspension for instillation into trachea prior to bronchography.
Uses : Propyliodone is used as a diagnostic aid (radiopaque
medium) for the examination of the bronchial tract.
Side Effect
Propyliodone may give rise to transient pyrexia, sometimes
associated with malaise and aching of the joints. In few cases dyspnoea,
transient lobar collapse and allergic reactions may also occur.
