PSEUDOEPHEDRINE
Brand Names : d-Pseudoephedrine; d- ψ -Ephedrine; d--isoephedrine.
Pseudoephedrine is obtained from Ephedra species; m.p. 119°;
sparingly soluble in water (differs from l-ephedrine); freely soluble in
alcohol or ether. The drug and its salts are stored in airtight containers and
protected from light.
Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride (Brand Names : Novafed; Sinused;
Sudafed; Symptom 2), m.p. 181-182°, is a white crystalline powder with a faint
characteristic odour; soluble in water, alcohol and chloroform.
Pseudoephedrine sulphate is also a white, odourless crystalline
powder.
Uses
It is a sympathomimetic agent , has been used
to counteract hypotension associated with anaesthesia; as a mydriatic; in
allergic reactions and as a CNS stimulant. Ephedrine salts have been used in the symptomatic relief of
nasal congestion associated with the
common cold, hay-fever, sinusitis. But it has less presser activity and central
nervous system effects . Pseudoephedrine is a useful bronchodialator , but is
much less active in increasing blood pressure .
