PYRIDOSTIGMINE BROMIDE
PYRIDOSTIGMINE BROMIDE
Brand Names : RO 1-5.130; Mestinon bromide; Kalymin; Regonol;
Pyridostigminium bromide.
This pyridinium salt is an analogue of neostigmine in which
the aniline radical is substituted by a heterocyclic ring. For its preparation,
pyridine-3-sulphonic acid on fusion with potassium hydroxide and then
acidification yields 3-hydroxypyridine. This is treated with dimethylcarbamoyl
chloride to yield pyridyl dimethyl carbamate which is quaternized with methyl
bromide:
Pyridostigmine bromide, m.p. 152-154°, is a white crystalline
powder with an agreeable characteristic odour. It is freely soluble in water.
alcohol and chloroform; practically insoluble in ether, acetone and benzene;
stored in airtight containers and protected from light.
Uses : The uses and adverse
effects of pyridostigmine bromide are similar as mentioned under neostigmine,
but is slower in onset and of longer duration. It is mainly used in the
treatment of myasthenia gravis.
Adverse Effect
Adverse effects occur less frequently with pyridostigmine
treatment than with neostigmine.
