QUINIDINE
QUINIDINE
Brand Names : Conquinine, Pitayinee: β-Quinine.
Quinidine, m. p. 174-175°, is a dextro-rotatory stereoisomer of
quinine which is present is Cinchona barks to the extent of 0.25-3.0 percent.
Most of the compound available in the market is prepared by isomerization of
quinine. Quinidine and its salts (e.g. gluconate, sulphate) respond to all the
tests for quinine. Both of these alkaloids are distinguished by means of the
polarimeter. Quinidine gives blue fluorescence in dilute --- SO. It is very
soluble in methanol and chloroform; slightly soluble in alcohol and ether;
practically insoluble in petroleum ether.
Uses : Quinidine has cardiac depressant (antiarrhythmic).
antimuscarinic and alpha-adrenergic blocking properties. It is used to maintain
sinus rhythm after cardioversion of artrial fibrillation and for the prevention
of arrhythmias.
Side Effect
Quinidine causes both cardiac and extracardiac adverse effects.
They comonly cause gastro-intestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and
diarrhoea.
