QUNACRINE OR MEPACRINE HYDROCHLORIDE

Quinacrine hydrochloride occurs as a yellow, bitter crystalline
powder. It is sparingly soluble in water (1:35); more soluble in hot water;
slightly soluble in alcohol and insoluble in n ether, benzene, and acetone; pH
of a 1% aqueous solution is about 4.5.
The yellow colour that quinacrine imparts to the urine and the
skin is temporary and should not be mistaken for jaundice. It is stored in
airtight containers and protected from light.
Uses : Quinacrine was formerly used for the suppression and
treatment of malaria but it has been replaced by chloroquine and other
antimalarials. It is used in the treatment of giardiasis, for the expulsion of
tapeworms and neoplastic effusions in the pleura or peritoneum. Adverse effects
include dizziness, headache and mild gastro-intestinal disturbances.
