RAUWOLFIA ALKALOIDS
Synonyms : Chotachand,
Rauwolifia; Rauwolifia serpentina; Raudixin; Rauserpa; Rauvel.
Rauwolfia is the powdered whole root of
Rauuvolfia serpentina (Apocynaceae). It contains not less than 0.15 per cent of
reserpinerescinnamine group alkaloids calculated as reserpine. This is a small
shrub native to the Orient from India to Sumatra. It contains many indole
alkaloids, e.g., reserpine, resespinine, yohimbine, ajmaline, serpentine and
respentinine.
The most active as hypotensive agents being the ester alkaloids,
reserpine and rescinnamine. The drug is stored at 15° to 30° in a dry place.
Rauwolfia powder is a light-tan to
light-brown powder, sparingly soluble in alcohol and only slightly soluble in
water. It contains the total alkaloids, reserpine being about 50 percent of the
total activity. Extracts are sold under trade names, such as Austrawolf,
Egalin, Gendon, Hiwolfia, Koglucoid, Ralfen, Raucolyt. Raudixin, Raulfin,
Raurixin, Rauserpol, Rautensine, Rauverid, Rauvilloid, Ra-Valeas, Rauwoldin,
Rawotal, Rivadescine, Roxinil, Sarpagan. Serpina. Wolfin.
Uses : Rauwolfia is used as an antihypertensive agent.
