RIFAMPICIN
Brand Names : Rifaldazine; Rifamycin AMP; R/AMP; Rifampin; Rifa;
Rifadin; Rifadine; Rifaldin; Riforal; Rifaprodin; Rifobac; Rifoldine; Rimactan;
Rifamicinum.
It occurs as odourless, brick red to reddish brown, crystalline
powder; m.p. 183-188° (dec); very slightly soluble in water; freely soluble in
chloroform; soluble in ethyl acetate, methyl alcohol and tetrahydrofuran.
Rifampicin is a " Zwitterion" with pka 1.7 related to the 4-hydroxy
and pka 7.9 related to the 3-piperazine nitrogen. A 1% suspension in water has
a pH of 4.5 to 6.5. Rifampicin is stored at a temperature not excerding 15° in
airtight containers in an atmosphere of nitrogen and protected from light
Uses:
Rifampicin is antibacterial and
antitubercular and is used 'in the treatment of infections due to mycobacteria.
It is usually the most effective drug for administration in association with
isoniazid in the primary treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. It is used to
eradicate nasal carriage of Neisseria meningitidis and other microorganisms; in
non-tuberculous conditions caused by susceptible organisms. No major
side-effect has been reported.
During intermittent therapy
gastro-intestinal disorders, abnormalities in liver function, jaundice,
drowsiness, headache, ataxia, dizziness, etc, may occur.
