SODIUM AMINOSALICYLATE

SODIUM AMINOSALICYLATE

Brand Names : Aminox; Gabbropas; Pasalon; Pasalon-Rakeet; Passodico; Salvis; Pasid: Tubersan; Sanipirol; Pamisyl sodium; Pasmed sodium; Aminopar; Paramycin; Nippas; Lepasen; Paramisan; Bactylan; Osacyl; Entepas; Enteropas; PAS sodium dihydrate; Aminosalicylate sodium; Aminosalyllnatrium; Natrii para-aminosalicylas; Pasalicylum solubile; Sodium-para-aminosalicylate: Sodium PAS: Sodium 4-amino-2-hydroxybenzoate dihydrate; Parasal sodium; Pasara sodium; Pasem sodium; Parapas sodium, Paraminose.

It is compound occurs as a yellow-white, crystalline powder. It is soluble in alcohol; one gram dissolves in 2 ml water; very  sparingly soluble in acetone; practically insoluble in etherNchloroform and benzene. Solutions of the soditim salt are more resistant to heat than PAS. Aqueous solutions decompose rapidly, the N Hշ rate depending on the pH and the temperature.

he pH of maximum stability is in between 7 to 7.5. Two types of reactions are involved in the decomposition process. The first is decarboxylation to form m-aminophenol. In the second reaction oxidation of p-aminosalicylic acid or of the m-aminophenol, or both. is involved in which brown to black pigment is produced. Freshly prepared solutions of pure sodium p-aminosalicylate are almost colourless. On standing they develop an amber and finally dark brown or black colour. Solutions should be prepared within 24 hours before administration. The drug is stored at a temperature not exceeding 40° in airtight containers and protected from light.

Uses

Sodium aminosalicylate is used with isoniazid and streptomycin to treat pulmonary tuberculosis.
