SODIUM PROPIONATE

Sodium propionate occurs as transparent,
colourless crystals or white granular crystalline powder. It is odourless or
with a slight characteristic odour resembling acetic and butyric acids and are
deliquescent in moist air. It is soluble in water (1 in 1) and alcohol (1 in
25); practically insoluble in chloroform and benzene; stored in airtight
containers. Sodium propionate is most effective at pH 5.5 and generally is used
in a 10% ointment, powder or solution alone or in combination with other
propionates, caprylates or other antifungal agents for the treatment of
dermatophyte infections. Eye-drops containing sodium propionate (5%) are also
used. It is used in veterinary medicine and as esterifying agent.
Zinc Propionate : It occurs as needles or plates and is freely soluble
in water and sparingly soluble in alcohol. It decomposes in moist atmosphere to
form propionic acid. It is used as a fungicide. especially on adhesive tape to
reduce irritation cause by fungi and bacterial action.
