SODIUM SULFACETAMIDE

Brand Names : Soluble sulfacetamide; Beocid-Isoptal; Albucid soluble, Sulamyd sodium; Supracid; Locula; Antebor: Eye-Su; Op-Sulfa.

This is obtained as the monohydrate and is white or yellowish-white, bitter, odourless crystals or crystalline powder which is very soluble in water (1:2.5). It slowly darkens on exposure to light. It is sparingly soluble in alcohol; practically insoluble in chloroform and ether)A 5% solution in water has a pH of 8.0 to 9.5. When solutions are sterilized by heat, hydrolysis occurs forming sulfanilamide which may be deposited as crystals. It is stored in air tight containers and protected from light.

Uses

sodium sulfacetamide is used as an antibacterial mainly by local application in infections or injuries of the eyes as a 10 per cent ointment or as a 10 to 30 per cent solution every 2 to 4 hours. It is also used for skin infections and orally for urinary tract.
