Brand Names : Averon-1, Cefalotin; Cephation; Ceporacin;
Cepovenin; Ephalotin: Coaxin; Keflin; Los poven; Microtin; Synclotin;
Toricelocin.
Sodium cephalothin occurs as a white to off-white, odourless,
crystalline powder. It is freely soluble in O.9% sodium chloride solution,
glucose solutions and water (1 in 3.5); slightly soluble in alcohol;
practically insoluble in chloroform, ether and most other solvents. Aqueous
solutions of cephalothin sodium are stable for 12 hours at 25° and for 48 hours
at 5°. Solution of cephalothin sodium may darken on storage at room
temperature) Its spectrum of activity is broader than that of penicillin G. It
is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is relatively nontoxic
and is acid stable. It is excreted rapidly through the kidneys, about 60% is
lost within 6 hours of administration. The drug is stored at a temperature not
exceeding 25° in airtight containers.
Uses :Cephalothin sodium is similarly used to cephaloridine.
Adverse Effect
Allergic reactions are identical to that of cephaloridine.
Neutropenia, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia and haemolytic anaemia have
occasionally been reported. Nephrotoxicity has occurred in patients with
existing renal impairment. There may be pain at the injection site.
Gastro-intestinal adverse effects have been reported rarely.
