SOLAPONE
SOLAPONE
Brand
Names : Phenopryldiasulfone sodium; Salapsone. RP 3668; Cimedone; Sulphetrone;
Solasulfone: Solasulfonum
Solapsoneis the sodium salt of a
tertrasulphonic acid made by condensing dapsone with cinnamaldehyde (a typical Schiff base
preparation) in the cold followed by addition of Sodium bisulphite to the
resulting conjugated compound, 4,4'-dicinnamylideneaminodiphenyl sulphone.
Solapsone is an almost white powder, becomes anhydrous
at in vacuo; exceedingly soluble in cold water, giving a neutral solution;
practically insoluble in cold alcohol. Acidcatalyzed hydrolysis readily
reverses the bisulphide addition reaction, with formation of cinnamaldehyde,
sulphurous acid and a dapsone salt.
Uses :
Solapsone has the action, uses and side-effects of dapsone. It is
given as an antileprotic drug to treat leprosy. It is more slowly absorbed than
dapsone and is used in much larger doses.
