Brand Names : Sesquisulfate; Agri-strep; Streptobrettin,
Streptorex, Vetstrep; Sulfato de Estreptomicina; Streptomycini sulfas.
It is a white to light grey or pale buff powder with faint amine-like
odour. It is very soluble in water; practically insoluble in alcohol,
chloroform and ether; incompatible with acids and alkalies. The sulphate is
stable in light and air. Streptomycin and its salts are kept in air-tight

Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic mainly used in the
treatment of tuberculosis. It is effective in the treatment of plague,
tularaemia, and, in conjugation with tetracycline, in brucellosis .
Registance has been observed in strains of most of the organisms
reported to be sensitive to streptomycin. Another factor which limits its
therapeutic is chronic toxicity. Certain neurotoxic reactions have been
observed after the use of streptomycin. They are characterized by vertigo,
disturbance of equilibrium and reduced auditory acuity.
In combination with penicillin, streptomycin is used to ièsubacute
bacterial endocarditis and postoperative infections. streptomycin is rapidly
absorbed after intramuscular injection.
Adverse Effect
Streptomycin can produce
nephrototoxicity,respiratory depression, muscular paralysis, hypomagnesaemia,
hypocalcaemia, hypokalaemia and some other effects like anaemia, purpura,
convulsions, visual disturbances, etc
