SUCCINYLSULFATHIAZOLE
SUCCINYLSULFATHIAZOLE
Brand names : Sulfenterone; Kaoxidin. Thiacyl; Sulfasuxidine.
It is obtained by refluxing sulfathiazole with a slight excess of
succinic anhydride in alcohol or by refluxing p-succinimido benzenesulfonyl
chloride with 2-aminothiazole in benzene.
This compound occurs as a white, odourless crystalline powder with
unclear m.p. (184-186° and 192-195°). It is stable in air but slowly darkens on
exposure to light. It is soluble in water (1 : 4,80O); sparingly soluble in
alcohol and acetone and insoluble in chloroform and ether. It emits pungent
fumes on heating to melting point. It is soluble in dilute acids and bases and
dissolves in sodium bicarbonate solution with evolution of carbon dioxide. It
is protected from light
Uses
It is an intestinal antibacterial agent. Due to its slow
absorption and low toxicity, it is useful in bacillary dysentery
