SULFACETAMIDE
SULFACETAMIDE
Brand Names : Acetocid; Bleph10;
Acetosulfamine; Sulfacyll; Urosulfone. Albucid: Sulamyd , sulfacet
Sulfacetamide,
a simple acetyl derivative of sulphanilamide, was introduced for use in
infections of, and injuries to, the eyes; it is used in the form of its sodium
salt. It is prepared by diacetylating sulfanilamide with acetic anhydride and
then removing the N-acetyl group by selective alkaline hydrolysis ..
It
is a white , odourless , crystalline , powder m.p. 182-184* slightly soluble in water (1: 62.5 at 37°) and ether; soluble in
alcohol; very soluble in chloroform and hot water; freely soluble in dilute
mineral acids and solutions of alkali hydroxides. Its aqueous solutions are
acidic to litmus and sensitive to light; they are unstable when acidic or
strongly alkaline. It is stored in well-closed containers and protected from
light
Uses:
Sulfacetamide
is a short-acting sulfonamide which was Miscellane formerly used in the
treatment of bacterial infection of the urinary tract. It is absorbed readily
from the gartro-intestinal tract, and the concentration in the blood is
proportional to the oral dose administered. It is excreted primarily in the
urine. Because of its high solubility and ready elimination, it has found
considerable use in urinary tract infections, since it is possible to maintain
high urinary concentration without danger of kidney damage.
