SULFADIAZINE
SULFADIAZINE
Sulfadiazine is prepared by the condensation of 2aminopyrimidine
with p-acetylsulphanilyl chloride and then hydrolyzing the product with alkali.
Sulfadiazine occurs as white or slightly yellow, odourless,
cryštalline powder, m.p. 252-256°, sparingly soluble in water at 37 (1 : 8,
100), alcohol and acetone. It is freely soluble in dilute mineral
acids and in solutions of potassium and sodium hydroxides
and in ammonia water; insoluble in chloroform.
It is slowly darkened on exposure to light. It is stored in
well-closed containers and protected from light.
Uses
Sulfadiazine is considered a drug of choice in a number of
infestions, such as pneumococcal, meningococcal, Friedlanders bacillus, and
influenza infections. It exhibits fewer toxic reactions than most of the other sulphonamides. It is absorbed slowly
and also excreted slowly.
Side effect
Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are relatively common following the
administration of sulfadiazine and other sulfonamides. Hypersensitivity and
nephrotoxic reactions may occur .
